General
Introduction and Subject IntroductionThe event includes a workshop on sustainable development goals and environmental aspects. The presentation starts by defining sustainable development and explaining how this concept was developed in the United Nations platform. It is emphasised that sustainable development is based on the principle of meeting today's needs while not jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
• Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The presentation explains the transition from 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted in 2000 to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. Each of these goals aims to address global challenges by covering different areas of development. These goals include ending poverty, eradicating hunger, providing quality education, achieving gender equality and increasing access to clean water and sanitation services.
• Environmental Sustainability
The workshop places a special emphasis on the environmental dimension of sustainable development. Environmental sustainability involves making a commitment to reduce environmental risks and measuring the environmental impact of activities. Challenges in this area include conserving natural energy and agricultural resources, reducing carbon footprint and achieving sustainable development goals.
• Economic and Social Sustainability
In the activity, it is emphasised that economic sustainability requires profitability in order for businesses to survive, but profitability should be achieved without creating negative impacts on people and the environment. In the social sustainability section, issues such as social equality, education, gender equality are discussed and the goals in these areas and what can be done to achieve these goals are explained.
• Project Introduction and Conclusion
In the last part of the activity, an example of a project that will contribute to sustainable development goals is presented. This project is explained through the example of a municipality that is trying to get support from EU funds by participating in a sustainable cities competition. The presentation inspires young researchers to develop their own project ideas and consider how these projects can be linked to sustainable development goals.
